Understanding the NFL Playoff Path
The NFL postseason is a single-elimination competition that follows the regular season. Fourteen teams qualify, with seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC. The bracket then narrows the field through the Wild Card, Divisional and Conference Championship rounds before the Super Bowl.
Wild Card and Divisional Rounds
Wild Card games begin the elimination stage for the teams that enter that round. The No. 1 seed in each conference receives a first-round bye. The Divisional Round then brings the highest remaining seeds into the competition, creating the matchups that determine the conference finalists.
Conference Championships
The AFC Championship and NFC Championship decide which team represents each conference in the Super Bowl. Seeding and home-field advantage can matter, but every postseason game ultimately comes down to one result: advance or finish the season.
